GET STARTED / FROM SOURCE

Your first test.
Starts small.

A practical path based on the supplied TestHand repository. This is a source-build guide—not an installer download.

01 / PREPARE

Start with the source.

Start in the root of your own TestHand checkout. Follow the repository README for your platform’s Qt SDK and build-tool requirements.

The Makefile selects Qt through QT_PREFIX. Set it to your own Qt installation prefix before building; installation paths and prerequisites differ by platform.

Terminal / in the TestHand checkout
make help
make build
02 / CONNECT

Choose your application.

Set the client path from the checkout root, then launch a supported Qt app. Replace the example path with your own executable.

The example below uses macOS/Linux POSIX shell syntax. For Windows, follow the repository’s Windows setup instructions instead.

Terminal / Qt backend
export PYTHONPATH=$PWD/client
python3 -m testhand launch -- /path/to/YourApp
python3 -m testhand windows
python3 -m testhand tree --depth 3

For supported external access, use launch --desktop or attach --pid. Read the backend limitations and configure OS permissions before sending real desktop input.

03 / TEST

Keep the first workflow focused.

Inspect the object tree to choose selectors that exist in your app. Try one action and one visible result, then grow the script.

smoke.testhand / plain text
# Launch and connect to your app first.
type 'Ada' --target '#nameEdit'
click '#greetButton'
wait '#greetingLabel' --for property \
  --property text --value 'Hello, Ada!'
screenshot --out result.png

Local testing. Real platform differences.macOS, Linux and Windows support differs. External desktop access may require OS permissions; available targets depend on accessibility support. No universal app compatibility or zero-permission promise.
